Custom designed: Advent Calendar

Just wanted to share a project we completed this weekend just in time for Christmas! We were commissioned to create an advent calendar for the Aloft Montreal Airport hotel located at the Montreal-Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport.

The criteria: we had to custom design it to match the décor and the feel of the trendy hotel, as well as have it big enough for it to be visible to the guests.

The result: a reusable 16" x 20" advent calendar with a custom easel stand, 24 doors decorated in Aloft's signature colours of blues and pinks with integrated business cards and logos on a dark grey background.

Products used: Cardstock-Fabriano, Bazzill; Paper-American Traditional; Embellishments-Petaloo, 7-Gypsies, Ranger Stickles, Cricut machine

Nous avons certainement fait de très belles connaissances et beaucoup d'entre vous sont devenues de bonnes amies. Jillian's Birthday Party

Jillian celebrated her birthday at our studio this Saturday! Along with her friends, Jillian created an envelope album with Basic Grey's Lime Rickey papers while mom, Shirley, lent a helping hand. For some of the girls, it was their first time doing a scrapbooking project but their albums came out great! They should be very proud!

This class will also help you use up some of those scraps of paper you have lying around. The canvas and clock works will be provided. You are asked to bring in a photo and some coordinating cardstock and papers from your stash of scraps.

July's card class will focus on creating a card kit for little girl/boy occasions. The kit will include sayings in english or french for a birthday, baby announcement, baptism and congratulations. Our card class on the 28th was a great success! 7 students completed four beautiful cards for any birthday occasion! They learnt everything from stamping to sanding, and even some chalking! Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to take pictures, but it was great seeing a full house! Thanks to all of you who took my class!

We had a successful class last Sunday with the Flipping Cube workshop! Our students spent 3 hours assembling this creative project designed by Cindy! Wooden blocks were decorated with S.E.I.'s Dill Blossom paper to form this carefully engineered project!

This project will entertain anyone that picks it up because you can flip it inside out to reveal six more sides. As it has 12 possible faces, I made it into a calendar with one face per month. You can also use it to document Baby's 1st Year. Come learn how to transform eight wooden blocks into a beautiful masterpiece that you can display on your desk or coffee table. We will use SEI's Dill Blossom papers to decorate the cube. All materials supplied except adhesives. Please bring a glue runner to adhere pictures.

7Gypsies Accordion Folder Album

With the economic crisis scaring the population into a coupon-cutting frenzy, we came up with a beautiful and interesting way to file those coupons! Innovated using long envelopes and a bit of chipboard, this filing system also uses 7 Gypsies paper and accessories to make it look even classier! It could also be used to file other important items, such as receipts or recipes. This project can be replicated and expanded using more envelopes, depending on the purpose! Ideal for beginner scrapbookers ready to advance to intermediate level!

Losing interest?

It seems that scrapbooking is slowly fizzling out in Quebec. In the last year, several stores have closed, including my own back in June 2008. It would be interesting to know if the scrapbooking bug has left Quebec. It seems like people just aren't into scrapbooking anymore and are moving on or leaving it behind. Or is it a result of there being less outlets to obtain supplies?

On an international level, it seems that attendance of both manufacturers and retailers at the major scrapbooking trade shows has also declined in the last couple of years. The current economic situation may be playing a role in this trend.

In 2006 I held a crop on December 31st to ring in the New Year. Everyone came in their pyjamas and we cropped from 7pm to 4am or something like that. It was a potluck. Everybody brought something to eat or drink and we had champagne at midnight! We had a lot of fun.

I didn't do it last year but someone asked me if I would be willing to do it again this year. So... I'm taking a poll to see how many people would be interested in participating. Based on this poll, I will decide if there is enough interest.

The poll ends on December 26 so get your votes in!

Friday Night Crops - December only

I'd like to let you all know that Friday night crops are available during the month of December.

They will run from 6pm to 12am. The cost is $7 per person. I will require a minimum of 4 people. If there are less people than this, it will be cancelled.

If you would like to reserve, send me an email at lascrapitale@gmail.com with the date and the number of people you will be. You can also reply to this post and I will update the post with the number of reservations for each day. We can accommodate up to 12 people each day. I will require a payment to reserve your spot. In the event that the crop is cancelled, your payment can be applied towards the next crop or it will be refunded.

Sorry ladies. The studio is not ready to open. In all my excitement to open, I forgot a very important detail which can not be installed for another week. So I've moved the opening date to 2 weeks from now on October 18th. We will be in a much better position to welcome you then.

The website has been taken down for "renovations". It will be up again in a little bit.

The studio is about 5 mins away from the OLD location. It is further down Victoria towards the St-Lambert Village. Once you reach the McDonald's on Victoria, you need to turn right. We are not far from the corner on the right hand side. The business downstairs is called Nishimura Micro.

Parking is available on the street or in the back behind the building.

Two months later... Details

Ok people...here's the scoop. Renovations are not going as smoothly or as quickly as I would have hoped. This is partially due to my crazy schedule and partially due to me being disorganized. Things are slowly coming together and I have a bit more time now to get things organized. So without further ado, I will give you these tidbits of news:

The new place will not be a retail store. It will be more of a studio where you can come to work on your projects. We will be focusing on classes, projects and special events like National Scrapbooking Day, Breast Cancer awareness, Crop days, etc. We are also streamlining our business to concentrate more on our custom services for invitations and personal projects.

Our online store will be set up and you will be able to pick up your order at the studio and save on shipping. Our website will be going down soon for a complete revamp. The online store will replace the current content. I looked at the demographics of our client base and I spoke to a few of you before we closed. I understand that some of you are not comfortable purchasing online and took that into account when I was planning the new business. That is why our studio will also serve as a showroom. Order what you like online and we'll put it aside for you. Then you can come by and take a look at it and pay for it at the same time. This eliminates sending your credit card info over the internet and limits the chances of you buying something that does not meet your expectations. You will also save on shipping costs. This will be subject to some restrictions.

Opening hours will be weekends only. Due to the limited time available in my schedule, I will only open during the weekend. I've thought long and hard about it and I just can't dedicate the same amount of time to it as I did before, at least not for the moment. The last year of business was particularly hard for me after the departure of my beloved Ivan and I got really tired of running the business. It became a chore and was no longer enjoyable. At this point, I do not intend to open as a retail store again. HOWEVER, if I see that there is a demand and if the sales figures warrant it, I will CONSIDER it. First Class, Saturday October 25, 2008: Our first project will have a breast cancer theme. This will be a 4-hour class. Part of the proceeds of the day will be donated to breast cancer research. Details, cost and pictures of the project will be posted shortly. Advance registration and a non-refundable deposit will be required. For those of you who would like to donate your project to someone affected by breast cancer, I will contact the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation as well as the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and other local organizations to see if they would be interested and what the procedure would be.

The lease has been signed and renovations are starting this week. We will be located in Ville LeMoyne on St-Louis. The 1000 sq.ft. new space will still look like the La Scrapitale that you are all familiar with but only better and newer. I will post the address and opening hours soon, as well as the details of our first class.

As you may know, we closed our retail outlet in May and planned to start our online store in the month of June. Of course, things got in the way: the nice weather came along, people moved, and people broke up with their boyfriend. Physically and mentally, we were tired so we took some time off. Now we find ourselves in July and we're still not up and running. For those of you who know us, this comes as no surprise! I ran into a client at Tim Horton's last week and she told me how she was upset at us for not keeping in touch and updating this blog. It occurred to me that there were people counting on me to get my online store up. These are the customers that have been there since the very beginning when we opened the store and who have remained loyal to us and I realized that no amount of money can buy that kind of loyalty. So, I'm putting my plan in action and you should be seeing some changes soon.

An idea has been brewing in my head for a while now. I have decided to re-open the business, but with a different focus and a renewed purpose. I've already found a new location that is 5 minutes away from the old place. It will be perfect for what I have planned! More details to come soon!

We've been trying to get a newsletter out for some time and we never seem to be able to complete it. So I'd like to get you up to speed on some of the things that happened since the holidays.

Our Sunshine Crop was a huge success. You guys came through with 75 mini albums in such short notice-almost double of what our goal was! The box of albums was delivered to the Montreal Children's Hospital on December 18.

Thanks so much for participating and thanks to Diane Simpson for bringing this cause to our attention. For 2008, we will be repeating this event starting in October. Of course, you don't have to wait until October to start! The earlier you start, the more albums we can make and more children will receive a ray of sunshine in the coming holiday season.

Notre "Sunshine Crop" à éte un grand succès! Nous sommes très fière de nos clients qui ont remis 75 mini-albums! C'était presque le double de notre objectif de 40 mini-albums! Les albums ont été livrés le 18 décembre à l'hôpital de Montréal pour enfants.

Merci à tous le monde pour votre participation et un gros merci à Diane Simpson pour nous donner l'opportunité de donner un rayon de soleil à ces enfants. Back from CHA Anaheim!

Just got back from CHA in Anaheim last night and boy what an adventure. Our flight from Orange County was delayed for 2 hours because of a snow storm in Chicago. We were hoping that our connecting flight would also be delayed so, when we got to Chicago, we ran to the gate but it had already left. Luckily, there was a flight just starting to board for Montreal so we changed our tickets and got on that one. All this happened in a span of 10 mins. We were so happy that we were able to get a flight out that we didn't think about our bags. So, needless to say, when arrived in Montreal, our bags were not there. 3am found us filling out baggage claim forms along with all the other people whose bags did not make it either. We were told that the bags should be delivered within 24 hours. I waited all day and no bags. A call to United today told us that our bags did indeed arrive in Chicago when we did. They just never made it onto the plane to Montreal. So, let's just hope that the bags arrive soon.

Our bags were full of catalogs and make-n-takes and projects from our 5 days at the largest craft and hobby trade show. We placed some orders there and will order some more with our distributors back here in Canada. I had intended to place some more orders today but since I don't have any of my catalogs, I guess that will have to wait.
